Martina Björkman Nyqvist appointed to Sida’s board
Sida – the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency – works to improve living conditions for people living in poverty and oppression. The board is responsible for ensuring the agency operates efficiently and in accordance with the law, and that government funds are used responsibly. Sida’s budget for 2025 is SEK 24.3 billion. As global aid budgets are shrinking, understanding the impact of each investment is more critical than ever.
“I am very happy to join Sida’s board and hope to contribute with my long-standing academic experience in impact evaluation and evidence-based decision-making. At a time when aid is decreasing globally, it is more important than ever to ensure that every krona is spent on initiatives that generate the greatest possible impact,” says Martina Björkman Nyqvist.
When every krona counts
The government recently tasked Sida with using more scientific methods to evaluate its work – including randomized control trials. This is an area where Björkman Nyqvist is an international expert. Her research has shown how data and systematic evaluations can distinguish between programs that work and those that do not.
In addition to her work at the º£½ÇÉçÇøÏÂÔØand Misum, Björkman Nyqvist has extensive experience working with international organizations such as the World Bank, the former UK aid agency DFID, and the MacArthur Foundation.
Her term on Sida’s board will last for three years.
