SSE researchers presented new findings on low-performing schools at Skolriksdagen 2025

Yesterday at Skolriksdagen 2025, Ema Demir and Stefan Arora-Jonsson from the House of Governance and Public Policy (GaPP) at the 海角社区下载presented new research on how to improve academic outcomes in schools with persistently low performance.

Their study is based on a qualitative comparative analysis of 77 compulsory schools in Sweden and identifies key organizational and governance conditions that distinguish schools that manage to turn around from those that do not. The research highlights the importance of strong leadership, collaboration within schools, and the role of school organizers in providing sustained support. The project was carried out in collaboration with Uppsala University and Linköping University.

“Our findings show that sustainable school improvement isn’t just about individual efforts - it requires the right institutional support and leadership structures,” says Ema Demir, researcher at SSE.

“By understanding what actually works in schools that succeed despite difficult circumstances, we can design better policies to support all students,” adds Stefan Arora-Jonsson.

The presentation drew interest and sparked discussion among school leaders, policymakers, and municipal representatives attending Skolriksdagen, Sweden's largest annual conference for school governance.
