Brown Bag seminar in Economics | John Gorham
Welcome to the Brown Bag Seminar in Economics organized by the Department of Economics, SSE. The seminar speaker is John Gorham, SSE who will present "Status Concerns and Risk-Taking"
Abstract
I aim to investigate the relationship between status and risk-taking. To do this, I construct a novel experiment where participants play risky games to increase the payments they might take home. I introduce three areas of variation. First, I vary the observability of their returns, and their rank compared to others in the experiment will act as variation in the status returns of risk-taking behavior. The aim is to determine whether any observed increase in risk appetite is observed when status is available to participants. Second, I vary whether I broadcast outcomes which result in status gain or loss. This is intended to help determine whether individuals simply increase their risk-appetite when they are observed, or if they chase status as hypothesized and would be more risk-averse when they stand only to lose status from their actions. Finally, I allow the participants to set their own endpoints in the risky game, this is intended to study how status influences their selection into risky situations.
